Donald Trump just announced that he plans to put more money in the pockets of stay-at-home moms and destroy fraud all at the same time.
It almost seems too good to be true. Let me explain.
The Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) is the largest dedicated federal source of child care subsidies for low-income working families.
The program’s core purpose is to help parents work, train, or attend school by subsidizing child care for younger children.
There are just a few problems. In many states, those “low-income families” aren’t actually that low-income, and this welfare is being used by illegal immigrants across the nation.
In California, for example, a family of four just has to make under $115,600 to qualify. It doesn’t matter if you’re a U.S. citizen; under current law, taxpayers will pay $9,000 for someone else to watch your kid.
Not only does this create a massive fraud problem, but it also incentivizes mothers to work outside the home, away from their children. It’s clear which party designed that system, and it wasn’t the one that believes in the nuclear family.

“Paying providers upfront based on paper enrollment instead of actual attendance invites abuse. In Minnesota, we’ve seen credible and widespread allegations of fraudulent daycare providers who were not caring for children at all,” HHS Deputy Secretary Jim O’Neill said. “The reforms we are enacting will make fraud harder to perpetrate.”
Trump’s proposal is very simple: take that money from the Child Care and Development Fund, created by the Clinton administration, and give stay-at-home moms $9,000 a year.
To qualify, families would need to meet the following requirements:
Be married
Have one spouse working at least 35 hours per week
Have the other spouse stay home to care for the children
Meet similar income requirements to the CCDF
The spending doesn’t go up, but it doesn’t go down either… and that’s where the proposal has drawn some criticism.
Republicans in favor of the bill argue this is clearly a net positive. The money was already being spent in a less favorable way, and now we can invest in families that prioritize being together.
Republicans against this bill argue that we shouldn’t have this spending at all; that it’s just another example of our bloated welfare system, and that fraud is entirely possible in this new program as well.
I’m a young parent. I had my first daughter at 23 and am expecting my second right now. My wife works from home, and truth be told… an extra $9,000 a year would make a huge difference. As a parent, I’ll take the money. Why wouldn’t I?
I’m also a fiscal conservative. I see that this is inflationary and ultimately may cost us more in the long run than it gives us. I think this is better than what we had before, but an even better policy would be eliminating large welfare programs altogether.
This proposal forces a real question: if the government is going to spend our money anyway, shouldn’t it support the parents actually raising their own kids instead of subsidizing a broken system? I’m torn between the relief it brings young families like mine and the principle of cutting spending, but one thing is certain: the conversation around who we incentivize has finally shifted.

So you would take the money?? Shame on you. You know it’s for votes and will cost billions. The Somali’s will be collecting. This program has FRAUD written all over it. A tax REFUND is one thing but sending out welfare checks is BS. How about the people like me who struggled to work opposite shifts from my spouse and working every weekend. Never got all this childcare credits or large tax credits for my kids Now that I’m a widow I have to pay for other peoples kids. My taxes are terrible.
