Trans NYT tech exec fatally shot by elderly in-laws after allegedly threatening to kill wife
Jonathan McKinsey, 40, a transgender New York Times director of engineering, was fatally shot by his elderly in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, in a Dublin, California parking lot Saturday, with witnesses saying the pair took turns firing at him.
Court filings from McKinsey’s wife, Candice Jang, who filed for divorce in 2025, allege he had previously threatened to kill her and her parents and had recently given their children a book about a mother’s death, which she said felt threatening given his past comments.
McKinsey faced misdemeanor child abuse charges tied to alleged abuse of Jang and their three young children, and the couple were locked in a contentious custody dispute with a hearing scheduled for this week. Police are investigating family conflict as a possible motive.
Dept of Ed formally rescinds Biden-era Title IX rules, defines sex as male/female
The Education Department finalized a rule Tuesday removing Biden-era Title IX regulations, which had extended protections based on gender identity and sexual orientation, and restoring Trump’s first-term rules defining sex as male or female at birth.
A federal court struck down the 2024 rules in January 2025, and the department has enforced 2020-era rules since; Monday’s action formally updates the federal regulations after the last related lawsuits were dismissed in August.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon said the change aligns written regulations with court rulings and current enforcement, framing it as reducing confusion while reaffirming protections for women’s athletic and privacy rights.
Minnesota’s fraud problem just gets worse
A new city audit found Minneapolis lacked sufficient oversight of over $36 million spent since 2023 on five violence-prevention programs stemming from more than 100 contracts issued to community groups after George Floyd’s death, citing weak invoice review and missing documentation.
Policy analyst Bill Glahn, who previously scrutinized the city’s violence-interrupter program, said grant recipients often lacked financial capacity or track records matching their funding, noting one participating organization had staffers involved in a violent incident in 2021.
