The Department of War is sending U.S. troops to the southern border in response to Coast Guardsmen being shot at from the Mexican side during a patrol in the Rio Grande.
According to the Coast Guard, personnel were fired upon “in the vicinity of Garceno, Texas while conducting joint interdiction operations with federal partners on the Rio Grande. Coast Guard personnel returned fire. No injuries to Coast Guard, or other personnel were reported, and no damage to Coast Guard assets was reported.
“Threats to Coast Guard members and our partners are taken extremely seriously. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation,” the service branch added.
NewsNation correspondent Ali Bradley reported on Friday that 500 troops were deployed in response to the threat, even dropping service members off on the small islands within the Rio Grande in Chinook helicopters.
U.S. Northern Command confirmed the deployment, saying the troop movement is now part of Operation Unified Resolve.
“Operation Unified Resolve will increase patrol capacity, reinforce key areas, provide additional monitoring and detections capabilities, and reinforce security of critical location in support of the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection,” NORTHCOMM said. “The operation is part of the ongoing Operation Ardent Vanguard, through which Joint Task Force – Southern Border continues to provide military capabilities in support of protecting U.S. sovereignty at the Southern Border.”

Shootings at the U.S.-Mexico border are nothing new. During the Biden-Harris border crisis, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported shooters on the Mexican side targeting Border Patrol agents on multiple occasions. While there were no fatalities, at the time it was seen as a flexing of power since the U.S. border was open and cartels enjoyed greater power.
What could be the motivation for the most recent cartel shooting? The Border Patrol union for the Rio Grande Valley Sector offered the following explanation:
“#FAFO The desperation from the criminal cartels is showing due to the complete shutdown of the U.S./Mexico border by the…Trump Administration. They got away with lawlessness under Sleepy Joe, but they’re f’d now!”
The area where September’s shooting is particularly dangerous as it has long been used by cartels to smuggle attempted gotaways and drugs into south Texas.
Unlike during the Biden administration, this response by the Trump administration is much stronger and sends the right message. The surge in U.S. military members is much easier than before since units have been at the border since the start of Trump’s second term.
The American southern border is a whole world unto itself, with each sector being different from the other. The fact the U.S. military did not have a stronger presence before Trump shows the vulnerabilities our nation can still have, even in the aftermath of the War on Terror.
It is a sad reality that the various Mexican cartels exert a lot of power on the immediate side of both borders. It can be said for certain this enhanced deployment will not be welcomed news for them.

AN APPROPRIATE RESPONSE - - the Administration is all-over this and the guys taking fire responded w standing orders to defend & respond to ANY threat. ........ ........blessings everyone
This is so sad to hear, but we must defend America from the evil and damages from the Cartels! 🙏😢
