Meta reaches $18B settlement over child safety, teen suicide claims
Meta settled with 48 states for roughly $18 billion over allegations it knowingly harmed children through its platforms, ending a federal trial. Parents of teens who died by suicide called the settlement partial vindication while emphasizing it can’t undo their losses.
As part of the deal, Meta agreed to limit teens to two hours of daily use, disable notifications during school hours and overnight by default, add new parental controls, and send usage alerts every 15 minutes — while urging TikTok and YouTube to adopt similar measures.
Critics, including attorney Matthew Bergman, noted these changes were long recommended internally at Meta and called them a step forward but insufficient. Some parents, like Kathleen Spence, viewed the settlement as a meaningful shift in power toward families, though litigation continues in states like New Mexico and Florida that didn’t settle.

Luka Binniyat, a Nigerian journalist jailed for over 80 days after reporting on muslim militants attacking Christians in his home country, was cleared in May after a five-year legal battle, now he’s free to report the truth.
“You should not allow Islam to gain root in America. They’ll come there with values that are not your own, and even if they are a minority, they will eventually try to enforce their own religion, their own beliefs over the community,” the 60-year-old Binniyat told The Daily Wire. “In Nigeria — here in the Muslim-dominated areas — Christians do not have rights.”
Binniyat, who has documented mass killings and describes the violence in Nigeria’s religiously divided regions as genocide, said Christians face systemic persecution from Islamist militant groups including Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen, prompting the U.S. to designate Nigeria a country of particular concern in 2025.
His case drew support from groups including Alliance Defending Freedom International and the Committee to Protect Journalists. Now free, Binniyat says he plans to keep reporting on Christian persecution and is urging Americans to resist what he views as the growing influence of Islam in the U.S.
